February 2011
Marching on with new developments!
Dear friends
Zippy Connections
Perhaps the greatest news of the month is that Jana has got a faster Internet connection at home and will no longer need to lurk around friends’ Wi-Fi spots in order to send the newsletter off speedily! Yes, we are a homegrown business and that involves finding our feet. Many thanks to Hugh Hodge, IT specialist extraordinaire who has helped us immeasurably in all matters related to the newsletter, our database and our laptops. His fees are reasonable and he is one of the nicest people we know – hahodge@gmail.com.
White Rabbit Winner
Congratulations to Thirsty and Frustrated who sent us her winning (in more ways than one) White Rabbit question, which earned her a discounted therapy session. She asks about unanswered questions at the end of a relationship. On our White Rabbit page, we begin answering them...
Do you know your False Self?
Last month we touched on the tricky issue of being a mistress…we noted that this situation is not necessarily a problem, but if it is causing you pain, consider the following:
“We are born in authenticity (the authentic self) and as we grow up, and life happens to us, we tend to respond to its knocks by developing an accommodating ‘false self’ as a coping mechanism. This false self is not about ‘shining our light’, but about surviving – so often it is compliant, depressed, tends to replay old wounds, and is identified with suffering. It may lead us to unconsciously make choices that traumatise us further. Weird as this sounds, it is actually an attempt at helping ourselves – repetition is the psyche’s way of trying to digest something (hence nightmares and flashbacks after a car accident, for example). So we replay old stories of hurt, wounding and abandonment. This is universal (we all do this) – and your ‘trauma’ can be small, perhaps it was just being overlooked by parents who were busy with their careers, or a sibling, or who criticised you as a way of trying to teach you, or whatever…”
We will give you a clue about how to shift this self-defeating position in next month’s newsletter. A journalist has also recently asked us what we thought about children partaking in beauty pageants…keep you posted? Contact us at changemattersinfo@gmail.com
Fieldwork Programme
We are delighted to announce the launch of our fieldwork programme in April. This means that a student from SACAP (The South African College of Applied Psychology) will be joining us from time to time. SACAP is the worthy institution that trained Miranda (apart from the School of Life, that is). Mr Marc Maingard will be sitting in on a few pre-negotiated sessions over a 3 month period, and learning the Change Matters module in the process. We heartily welcome him. Currently this internship opportunity is only available to SACAP students, but by mid-year we will be offering it (with manual to follow) to all those practitioners who have been asking us to share what works with them. We sincerely hope to keep extending the Change Matters practice so that one moves to a neighbourhood near you, soon…To apply or for more info, contact us.
Remember that you can write to us to request our article, How Does Play Therapy Work? or to tell us what kind of topics you would like to see covered in our newsletter which, please remember, we are happy to send directly to your inbox – just request it.
With best wishes as always
Miranda and Jana
