The Innerbition Project

Welcome to The Innerbition Project, an 8-week therapy course.
We are looking for clients who would like to try a new form of therapy which combines counselling with an art therapy dimension. You will not have to do any artwork yourself.
You attend a standard 60-minute counselling session once a week. We ask that you bring a specific issue you would like to work on.
While you are being counselled, a second psychologist who is also present in the room produces a painting reflecting the contents of the hour (themes, concerns and feelings). You will not see the painting yet.
The canvas is divided into 5 sections. After 5 sessions, the painting is complete. In a 6th session, you attend your own private exhibition in which the canvas is presented to you (just you, and the two therapists attend). We call this exhibition an innerbition because the painting and the event itself is about your inner life, and because we have found it helps to clear away those inhibitions that are holding you back.
A discussion follows between all three of us, about the painting, and what it adds to the insights you have already achieved during this period of counselling.
We then offer two follow-up sessions to round the process off. We give you a photograph of your painting to take home with you, or you may purchase it if you wish. Your anonymity as a contributor to the creative product is guaranteed.
This service is claimable from medical aid.
Feedback About the Project
From the artist’s point of view:
“What strikes me now, looking at the paintings some months later, is how they each carry a particular mood that reminds me of the client – an internal reality. This has nothing to do with the client’s external way of being. Rather, it reveals the problem, and the way they feel about it. It really holds a mirror up to the client. There is hope in these paintings, ways out and solutions, and there is also stuckness, repeated old ways, difficulty, despair. Sometimes I feel all the pain that the client is trying to access, and I can show it to him/her. This is a process beyond words, which is where we believe real integration and healing lies.”
Our clients have said:
“The painting showed me the emotional process or landscape I had travelled and was more revealing than I thought possible.”
“I think of your painting and that I don’t want to ‘bleed’ anymore. I am my own empress.”
"The elements in it are elements in my life...talking about it you realise where you've been...a bit like a photo album..."
"My part in The Innerbition Project was one of life's enriching experiences. Attitudinal changes are hard wrought and I am grateful to Miranda and Jana in helping me into calmer waters."
From the therapists’ point of view:
“As therapists, we found that the paintings were able to tap into unconscious communications by the client – in other words, things that they could not express or access easily. For us, it was very helpful to have a visual record of the client’s internal life to refer to, rather than a page full of words. We found it easy to see the progress of the sessions on this ‘map’, namely what we were doing, and where the client was moving, and what was required of us in relation to the task.”
